10 Ways to Feel at Home When Living Abroad

You’re living in a new country. It’s an exciting experience and you’re having the time of your life! However, every once and awhile you might feel a pang for missing life at home. Here are 10 ways to feel at home when living abroad:

1) Call your Mom!

When you’re feeling down, miss home, or simply want to talk about your most recent adventure, calling your Mom (or Dad) should be a go-to option.  Your parents will always be there for you and chances are they will be living vicariously through you 🙂

2) Go to a Canadian Pub

Where better to feel at home than going to an establishment littered with Canadian paraphernalia and fellow Canadians!

3) Receive a ‘care package’

There is a good chance a swift wave of euphoria will take over you when you receive your first, second, or even third care package sent with love from home.

4) Like the “Meanwhile in Canada” Facebook page

5) Set your homepage to cbc.ca/news, canoe.ca, or theglobeandmail.com to stay updated on events happening back home 🙂

6) Eat some poutine or KD (or whatever comfort food you grew up with)

7) Hop on Skype or FaceTime to reconnect with friends & family back home (Whatsapp is also great for texting friends overseas at no cost!)

8) Meet fellow Canadians

Register yourself on www.voyage.gc.ca before you depart Canada and you’ll receive invitations by the Canadian Government for events happening in the country you’re residing in. For example, Canada Day Celebrations in Germany!

9) Have maple syrup with breakfast

Because what Canadian doesn’t like maple syrup? However, if you’re not a fan of the syrup, you can substitute with poutine, KD, ketchup chips, Nanaimo bars, or even with a couple mouthwatering beaver tails.

10) Call your mom again!

I’ll reiterate this. Your mom lives vicariously through you and will love to hear about your amazing adventures any day and at any given time! (OK, well maybe not at 2am). If you’re calling because you’re missing home, your Mom will assure you that she misses you dearly too. However, she will also encourage you to get back out there and keep living the dream! If it’s a call for support, your Mom is someone you can always rely on to be there for you! 🙂

For those currently living abroad I hope you’re having a phenomenal time! Make the most of these best years of your life and explore as much as you can. Just make sure to come back to Canada to tell us all about your life-changing adventures 🙂
